HUNTINGTON, Ind. — The Student Government Association voted to change the fee of parking tickets from $30 to $50.
During the SGA meeting on April 1, Lane Weirrick, chair of the parking committee, untabled the discussion on raising the parking tickets. The motion was passed 16-to-1.
“My primary desire to do this is because $30 is too negligible in its purpose,” Weirrick said. “There are a number of students that are everyday violators of parking rules that can just afford it and be completely fine because it is a 30 dollar fine that they can handle. Going to $50 makes it a lot more scary while still being relatively affordable.”
The areas that hold the most issue for misplaced parking are the commuter lots and the P-lot during the weekend.

In the meeting, Weirrick said that the ratio of students that received fines for incorrect parking was 4 to 10, with some repeat offenders getting let off of the charge.
SGA plans to discuss with the Student Life Committee how parking tickets are handled and how and when pardons are given to violators.
Aaron Benny, SGA member, proposed an amendment to the motion to “test the waters” by increasing the price by $40 and strengthened enforcement. The amendment was not ratified by the members of the SGA.
Other items on the agenda included:
- Continued discussion of the cleanliness and overall satisfaction of the DC
- SGA members Chloe Shellenberger and Dakota Collier volunteer to be Alpha Chi moderators for the Academic Research Forum
