Huntington’s new Japanese restaurant is a winner!

When I returned to campus after a long J-Term, I noticed something strange in the Huntington Plaza. One of the retail spaces, which had been vacant for quite some time, had lights and tables set up inside. A shiny red sign that hung above the door read, “New Yamato Steak House”
“What is this?” I asked with a quizzical look on my face. “A new restaurant…in HUNTINGTON?!”
The rare and momentous occasion called for me to try the establishment. How could I resist the temptation?
Due to COVID-19, I opted to do takeout this time around. I placed my order online in less than five minutes and went to go pick it up (in the freezing rain/hail mixture. You have to love this incredible March weather!). My order was ready on time with no issues. I even got a free container of miso soup with my meal.
Although I did not eat inside the restaurant, the decor looked exquisite. Red and black were the central theme colors with pops of neon thrown in. The walls were covered with East Asian inspired artwork. Elegant Japanese paper umbrellas and lanterns hung down from the ceiling. The interior design work was very impressive and would highly consider ordering in person one day.
Once I was back in my dorm room, I dug into my meal. I ordered two sushi rolls (California and Shrimp Tempura) and some pork dumplings. Everything was delicious, especially the dumplings. They came with a sweet soy sauce for dipping, which made them all the better. The sushi tasted fresh and had plenty of flavor. I wouldn’t say it was the best sushi I’ve ever had, but it was certainly FAR from the worst!
To anyone who is a fan of sushi and Japanese cuisine, I would highly recommend New Yamato Steakhouse. If you go before three o’clock, you can get some better deals. Consider visiting for lunch the next time the DC doesn’t suit your fancy.
I’m just thrilled that I no longer have to drive all the way to Fort Wayne to eat some good sushi!
