“The Haunting of Bly Manor” Review

Netflix releases another spooky drama series—just in time for Halloween!

By Sydni Wolpert, Staff Writer and Artist

Fans of “The Haunting of Hill House” on Netflix will be excited to hear that the series’ second season, “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” is another winner. I love a good spooky series, and this one had me binging one episode after another.

The two series’ are completely independent of each other, aside from the fact that the cast is stacked with returning actors and actresses from the first season. Main actress, Victoria Pedretti, steals the show once again with new actors such as Rahul Kohli and T’Na Miller adding excellent performances to the show’s success. “The Haunting of Bly Manor” is based on Henry James’ 1898 classic novel, “The Turn of the Screw,” and does an excellent job of modernizing the characters in a 1980s/90s setting.

I especially appreciate the new direction of spook that “Bly Manor” took. “The Haunting of Hill House” relied more on suspense, shock, and jump scares to frighten viewers. The show’s second season was more disorienting and outright creepy, spending less time hiding the ghosts and more time figuring out how to overcome them. The show does an excellent job of developing and investing the viewer into multiple plotlines that wind together in the end.

I would recommend “The Haunting of Bly Manor” to anyone who is looking for some late fall chills and a well-developed drama to escape into for ten episodes.
