The athletic department held the second annual Pack the Platt event Nov. 14 to prepare students for the upcoming basketball season. The event took place in Platt Arena.
Junior Tyson Kalishuck and senior Jac Rhine planned the event along with the department.
The event was emceed by Forester Digital Network’s broadcasters Victor McCarty and Logan Hunt. The two introduced the men’s and women’s basketball teams as well as the staff-versus-student basketball game. The student team won the competition.
“I love that people came to support the teams and cheer for us,” sophomore guard Miranda Palmer said. “As an athlete, it’s awesome to know you have support from your peers.”
Fly These Wings, a student-led band consisting of sophomores Eric Baker, Micah Butts, Noah Huffman and junior Niles Berry played at the event.
Rhine said a little over 100 students attended the event.
“I think that Pack the Platt is a work in progress,” she said. “We aren’t going to be able to throw an event like Midnight Maddness with this being a relatively new event to campus, but I think we’re making strides to making this a Forester tradition.”
Senior Joseph Brenneman said the event was not as successful last year’s event.
“It did not seem very well publicized,” he said. “I think more students would have gone if they had known about it. … It was pretty darn long.”
Rhine said she was “very pleased with the effort shown by the community in supporting our effort.”
“My hope is to include the Huntington community even more,” she said. “But I’m grateful for the students who came out.”
Rhine said she would like to have Pack the Platt begin earlier next year so the community can attend separately.
