Cierra Hickle is the new student activities board and multicultural activities board director.
1. Where did you go to college, and what was your degree?
I graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University with a double major in Public Relations and Intercultural Studies.
2. How did you find out about the student activities board job at HU?
I pretty much just stumbled upon the job. After graduation I was looking at all types of jobs and one of the areas I was interested in was higher education. I generally would look for positions in admissions, marketing or the PR department of a university but when I got on Huntington’s page I saw this job and it really resonated with me. I think student activities is a huge part of the college experience and I know for me some of the big campus events were my favorite memories from college. I also like the multicultural aspect of the job. This is something I am really passionate about and I think there is a unique opportunity on campuses like Huntington to build on multicultural awareness and have those types of conversations. So all of it just seemed to fit and God really guided the whole process to get me here.
3. What’s been the most surprising thing about the job so far?
The most surprising thing has definitely been how fun my job is. Not that I didn’t think it would be fun, but it is more fun and fulfilling then I imagined it would be. I love the events but I love them because I get to meet the students. I have had so much fun meeting new people and learning about Huntington. And of course the events themselves are fun. I mean who doesn’t love to sweat for two hours in a room packed full of freshmen? I just think this is a fun and exciting way for me to meet everyone and invest in students lives on a larger scale.
4. What’s it like getting immersed in the Huntington University atmosphere after graduating from Indiana Wesleyan University?
Huntington University is a great place. I didn’t know much about it before coming here but I definitely love everything about it so far. Obviously it is different than IWU. It is taking me some time to get used to all the lingo and culture on campus. I have a lot to learn about Huntington, but I am excited to learn it! But everyone here is so welcoming and willing to help me figure things out that it has just been a wonderful transition. I’m excited to learn more and become more immersed in Huntington culture.
5. How has the SAB staff made your transition a little easier?
My SAB staff is awesome. They are the most respectful, hard-working, creative, kind, dedicated, excited group of students I know. They love SAB and what we do for the campus and that makes it so much easier to work with them. I came in not knowing a ton about certain and events and I have been learning as I go but they have never hesitated to answer my questions or to get stuff done when I ask them to. They really fill me in on the stuff happening on campus and they are helping me with the lingo so I don’t look like a total newbie around campus. But seriously they are great. I don’t think I could have asked for a better staff this year. They have made this transition incredibly easy and I am so blessed by them. I am excited to see what the rest of the year holds for us!
6. Any new SAB or MAC events coming this year?
SAB’s fall events are all pretty traditional. There might not be any new events in the fall but we are looking for new things to add to each of these events. Huntington students are big on tradition which I think is great so we are trying to find creative ways to keep tradition but add new elements to each event. We may have a few more newer events brewing for the spring, but we will keep you posted on those. My other student group MAC is looking to bring a few new things this year though. We are doing some things that have been done in the past but are also looking to add a few new events about sports in different cultures and also a lot to do with food. Because who doesn’t love trying new food, right? So be looking for those as well!
7. Finally, how awesome will Olympiad be this year?
Olympiad will be awesome! Is that even a question? I am truly excited for this crazy event to take place. SAB is always thinking of new ways to make this event bigger and better, and we are so excited to put it on for the campus. You guys better be ready for a great year!
